Invoices, receipts, and customs
One of the first surprising moments for many people is seeing the Codice Fiscale appear in ordinary shopping situations, especially online. When you buy on Italian websites, from electronics to app downloads, you will often find a field that asks for your tax code during checkout or when you create an account.
Why e commerce sites ask for a tax ID
The main reason is invoicing and fiscal documentation. In Italy, if a customer requests an official invoice, the seller must include the buyer’s Codice Fiscale for individuals, or a VAT number for businesses, on that invoice. Because of this, many platforms collect the tax code upfront so they can automatically issue a compliant invoice in the customer’s name.
If you skip the field, the purchase usually still goes through, but it may be handled as a standard receipt rather than an invoice. In practical terms, that can mean losing the ability to use the expense for tax purposes where deductions apply. Put simply, without a Codice Fiscale or a VAT number, the seller cannot issue an invoice for the transaction. This is why many Italian online stores treat the Codice Fiscale field as a normal part of checkout for private customers.
Online purchases and digital goods
The same logic applies to software, ebooks, subscriptions, and other digital services. You are often asked for a Codice Fiscale so the purchase can be linked to your identity for invoicing.
Personal orders versus business orders
For personal, non business purchases, you typically enter your Tax Id. For business related purchases, you usually provide your Partita IVA instead. The document you receive, whether an invoice or another fiscal receipt, will include that identifier. This matters if you later need proof of purchase, want to support a warranty claim, or must demonstrate the expense for administrative reasons.
Store receipts and tax deductions
In everyday in person shopping, the Tax Code often appears in contexts connected to deductions, especially healthcare related spending. Pharmacies commonly ask for your tessera sanitaria, which contains your Fiscal Code, when you purchase medicines.
The scontrino parlante
The goal is to issue a scontrino parlante, meaning an itemized receipt that includes your Codice Fiscale. This is required if you want to claim eligible medical expenses in your tax return. Since 2008, pharmacy expenses are only deductible when the receipt reports the customer’s Codice Fiscale. In practice, the pharmacist scans the health card and the code prints directly on the receipt. Without it, you cannot later claim the standard 19 percent deduction for those medicines.
A similar approach applies to other services that may be partially deductible, such as visits to veterinarians, purchases from opticians, and comparable providers. They may request your Tax Id Code so it can be included on the invoice or fiscal document.
Loyalty programs and store cards
It can also show up in places that feel unrelated to taxes, like loyalty cards for supermarkets and retail chains. Many Italian companies use the Codice Fiscale as a convenient unique identifier in their customer databases.
Why retailers use it
It is not typically a legal requirement for loyalty programs, but it helps businesses reduce duplicate memberships and connect each profile to a specific individual. As a result, when you sign up for a points card, you may see a prompt like “Inserisci il tuo Codice Fiscale.” It is largely a widespread practice rather than a strict obligation.
International shipments and customs
Another common moment is receiving goods from outside the EU. If you order from a non EU country, such as the United States or the United Kingdom, the courier may request your Codice Fiscale before delivery.
Customs clearance and import duties
Italian customs procedures require a tax identifier for the importer, even when the importer is a private individual. Couriers often need the Codice Fiscale to prepare the customs paperwork and calculate duties and taxes. If the information is missing, your parcel can be delayed or held until you provide it. In some cases, depending on the shipment type or origin, an EORI number or the Codice Fiscale may be required regardless of value.
Whether you are buying online, collecting deductible receipts, joining a loyalty program, or importing goods from abroad, you should expect to provide your Italian Tax Id. The purpose is consistent: linking a purchase or shipment to an official identity so the transaction can be documented correctly for fiscal and regulatory reasons.
